Sedimentary provenance in Thailand

Lorin Davies, Msci – completed project

Previous studies have shown that heavy mineral assemblages can provide important information about the source and transport mechanisms of sediments. This project aims to investigate the heavy mineral assemblages of river sediments in Southern Thailand and how that relates to source rocks, drainage patterns and transport mechanisms.

A total of 12 river sediment samples were collected from Peninsular Thailand over a one-week period in September and sent back to Royal Holloway. The samples have been washed and sieved before being separated according to grain density and magnetic properties. The resulting heavy mineral assemblages will now be mounted in resin and point counted. Assemblages from across the field area will then be compared.
